• Excessive oil consumption (piston rings): MAIN ISSUE: Gen1/Gen2 pistons and rings allow excessive oil consumption — 1L per 1000km is not uncommon. Revised pistons exist (TSB 2011) but many units were never updated. Check oil level on test drive.
• Timing chain tensioner failure: Chain tensioner can lose tension at engine shutdown — chain skips on restart. Revised tensioner (2-prong → updated) is the fix.
• PCV valve (diaphragm) failure: PCV diaphragm tears — causes boost leaks, rough idle, and CEL. Integrated into valve cover on some versions.
• Carbon buildup (direct injection): GDI causes carbon deposits on intake valves. Walnut blasting every 80-100k km recommended.

• S8 petrol (106 listings, avg 170k km, €40k) — 4.0 TFSI V8 biturbo with cylinder deactivation. At high mileage: turbo wastegate actuators (€2000+ pair), carbon buildup on intake valves, adaptive air suspension (standard on S8, €2500+/corner). Fuel consumption 15-18L/100km city.
• HIGH RISK: VW/Audi/Skoda/SEAT 1.4 TSI (EA111) with 60k+ km — timing chain tensioner can fail on engine shutdown, causing the chain to skip on restart. This can destroy the engine. Check for rattling on cold start. Revised tensioner exists (€800-1500 to replace preventatively).
